Bible Contradictions: Did Jesus Fear Death?

The critics claim to have found evidence of Jesus fearing death. Could they be right?

A claim of Biblical contradiction is found in these two passages:

Luke 12:4 “I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more.”

John 7:1 After this, Jesus went around in Galilee, purposely staying away from Judea because the Jews there were waiting to take his life.

The claim is that Jesus was being hypocritical in His teaching by fearing death. However, it would be beneficial to ask where fear was present in Jesus’s avoidance of danger in John 7:1. Wouldn’t it be better to avoid danger whenever possible?

For example, if someone were to sell me a houseĀ in a location that’s extremely prone to flooding, would denying the purchase be an act of fear or common sense? Likewise, would Jesus be using common sense to avoid any danger if possible?

Let’s flip the scenario around. I now have no choice but to buy that house and there’s no possible way to decline. If I began to fear for my safety, I’d then be doubting what Jesus said in Luke. Same with Jesus. If He and the disciples were divinely called to confront those with evil intentions or had absolutely no other choice but to confront them, then Jesus would be contradicting what He said if He started to fear what they might do to them. This scenario, however, is nowhere to be found in the text. What we have is Jesus making a wise decision to avoid unnecessary danger and not a fearful run for His life.
